Mission Report No 73

The Carrs, The Ceffs, and The Orths

Monday 21 August 2023

This morning at 8.00am we went to our good friends, the Kimi'ia's, for what was our last breakfast with them. As usual, it was amazing! This family have been particularly good to all of us missionaries, having us in their home for brekky at least once every 6 weeks, if not more (up to 8 of us I think). And it's always been a breakfast fit for a king, which 81 year old Sr Kimi'ia gets up at about 4.00 o'clock to start preparing for us.

We had a senior missionaries council meeting over zoom, which we had to click into while driving home from the Kimi'ia's place.

Tonight, we had our new friends, Annette and Llew, as well as Elder and Sister Carr, come to our place for dinner. Annette is a Church member who has recently moved up here with her fiance, Llew, who is not a member, but he is quite interested in learning more about the Church. Annette is the sister of an old friend of mine from Melbourne, Ross Harman, so it was good to have that connection with them. We had a lovely night with them.

Kite foiling late this afternoon when the wind shut down, leaving me to swim in. Hard work! Met Ian Mills, who was up from Melbourne. He is kite foiling too and makes his own very nice little carbon fibre boards.

We made copies of a booklet containing memories of the pioneers of the church in Cairns which had been lent to the new Senior Couple and needed to be returned to Pres. Pitman in Brisbane.  Some of the members here in Cairns who had contributed but had misplaced their copies were pleased to get a copy.

We had a District Council meeting at 7.00pm tonight, which I attended via Zoom and did a presentation for the Council about Temple and Family History work.

Wednesday 23 August 2023

Very long talk with an old friend of mine, who has had a rough few years.

Come Follow Me class tonight, which Elder Carr taught and did a wonderful job of it, too.

Thursday 24 August 2023

Rode to the Esplanade Lagoon Pool this morning to do laps and then did a very short kite session this afternoon with the wind dropping very quickly again.

This evening we had our young sister missionaries come to have dinner with us.

Friday 25 August 2023

Did Tai Chi this morning.

We had a long talk this morning with Margot's brother, Greg, as it was his birthday today. He's always good to talk to.

Our good friend, Sister Skewes, invited us to dinner with her friend and her son who she is helping to come back to church.  The meal was delicious and enjoyed very much the time we spent together.

Saturday 26 August 2023

Tai Chi class this morning, which Elder and Sister Carr came to.

We went to Nimai and Marcella's place later in the morning to measure up the space for an extra desk for the new missionaries who will be there. Then when we went shopping, we saw Brett and Zoe who work at Central. We also bumped into Kainoa, and Annette and Llew and Aiko and her daughter.. Also approached by a Jewish man whose father told him to always extend a hand of friendship to members of our church and Jehovah Witnesses because of what Hitler did to them during the Second World War.

Went to the Taula's place tonight and had a good chat with them all and Sister Taula gave Margot and I hand crotched scripture carry bags which she had very lovingly made for us.

Sunday 27 August 2023

Zoe invited her two Japanese friends to come to church and they were surprised as we have five returned missionaries from Japan in Branch 1.

Attended both branches. The picture at the top of this report shows us with the Carrs, who are one of the couples replacing us, and the Orths, who are the couple that we replaced 18 months ago. The Orths, who are from down near Brisbane, came back for a visit.
