The last lunch - l to R Chadburn, Black, Spackman, Ricks, Schick, Hamilton, Ceff and Ceff
Monday 15th February 2023
Apart from an early bike ride/workout in the park/bike ride home, I think today was pretty much an at home day with probably lots of rain. Most days for the last week or two it seems, it has rained an inch or two.

Today, being the last P-day that we will all be together as a District (most likely anyway) we had all the Elders to our place for lunch.
After lunch we took our new friend Lois to a medical appointment. Lois is indigenous lady, originally from Palm Island, and has lived all around Queensland but has just in the year or so moved to Cairns. She saw an advertisement the Church had on Facebook and has been taught by the young Elders and has been to Church twice. She has also been to dinner at the Ziegelbauers and the Mitchells with us. Both of those families (who are very closely related) are Torres Strait Islanders, so she has felt at home with them, even though the TSI people seem quite different to the aboriginal people, and have different cultures.

This evening I interviewed Kcee Udonsi who lives in Nigeria. It was a real pleasure to interview this young returned missionary who is a very committed member of The Church.
Here's the video - please go in to YouTube and like and subscribe!
This evening we taught the Temple Preparation class, with the Wilferts attending in person at our place and the Eruetis attending via Zoom.

Today we were excited to meet Sue, the Fijian lady that we met while shopping last week. She is not a member of The Church, but she has two children who are, and one of them, her son, is about to serve a mission. We invited Elders Hamilton and Schick along too, and she enjoyed meeting them. We met down at Muddy's Cafe, on the Esplanade, overlooking the Coral Sea. It was really nice until the weather blew up a bit - that's the wet season in Cairns!

Early start today with breakfast at the Kimi'ias, then flat inspections with our young Elders, and then a visit with the Atherton Elders, Black and Chadburn, to the Cashmores. It turned out to be that last time we saw Elder Chadburn as he is being transferred down to Brisbane. It was a good visit with them all. One thing that really seemed to impress the Cashmores was that we told them that there is a 92 year old lady that the Elders are teaching who is getting baptised soon. We told them that we will come to Church up in Atherton this coming Sunday, and then they said that they might both come, so they can meet her!
Looking down from the top of the mast of John's yacht, that I was up on last week, helping to fix it. Yes, that's my foot. It's 9 metres high.

Busy day!
Tai Chi class at 8.00am.
10.30am Helping a Church member clean his flat that he and his daughter are moving out of.
3.00pm Deidre's baptism, which was a really special occasion for all involved. We have been helping the young Elders teach Deidre for almost a year. Elders Dollery and Pemberton baptised her son, Gregory, and the family have been taught by every set of missionaries covering the Gordonvale area since then, so it has been a long time coming.
L to R Elders Spackman and Ricks, Deidre.

Attended both Cairns branches today and I spoke in 1st Branch. Only got to give half my talk as there were two previous speakers who took up most of the time, but they were both very good.
A few weeks ago, we were invited to dinner with a friend of Miriam's, Latrelle Balmes, and his wife Lael. They cooked a beautiful dinner for us and I'm pretty sure I forgot to mention it. Here's a picture of us all. In contrast to last week, when we had Miriam and Taylor staying with us, this weeks report will probably have no pictures and no definitely no kitesurfing. It's probably been our busiest week doing real missionary work so far. And I think the busier we are like this, the less I will be able to write. Monday 30th May 2022 We had the pleasure of visiting our District President's mother, Sister Delilah Fa'Aoso and her mum, Mary Harris, today. It happened to be Sister Harris's 90th birthday, so it was a good day to visit. Unfortunately, because of the Sister Harris's health condition, neither are able to attend Church, but they were both very pleased to receive a visit. Tuesday 31 May 2022 One of our favourite members in Cairns, Brett Marr, was a...
A tropical flower - unknown to me. Can any of my Cairns friends tell me what it is? Monday 2 May 2022 We didn't realise that today was Labour Day holiday here in Queensland. We were able to have a fantastic Missionary Correlation Meting this morning with Cairns 1st Branch Mission Leader, Bro James Gardner (who is also 1st Counsellor in the Elders Quorum Presidency) and his wife Yvonne, who is the 2nd Counsellor in the Relief Society Presidency and responsible for missionary work in the Relief Society. I don't think I have mentioned before what a wonderfully dedicated Church family they are. They have 5 of their own kids plus 5 extra that are either fostered or adopted. James and Yvonne both served as missionaries in Japan in their young days and I'm pretty sure both later attended Brigham Young University - Hawaii, and graduated from there. He has been both a Branch President and District President in Cairns and Yvonne has served in many key callings. Having good mission...
Did Margot get a new car for her birthday? Tuesday 18th October 2022 Margot's birthday today. We celebrated with the Cashmores at the Pagoda Chinese Restaurant in Atherton. While there, one of the staff, a Pilipino lady, noticed Margot's nametag and told us that she is not a member of the Church, but she has a niece who is currently serving as a missionary in the Philippines. We had a brief chat with her, but she was very busy. And then we left without even getting a phone number from her! We're not the most efficient missionaries out there, are we? Leila came with us back to Cairns, to stay the night with her niece, before she catches a flight to Ethiopia, via Sydney, and Dubai, tomorrow morning. She is going for two months, so we will keep in touch with David while she is going. He's 83 years old and his health is not fantastic - it's been a downhill slide since he had a heart attack some years back. He's not about die or anything (I hope), but we might just...
