Mission Report No 25

We received an email from the Missionary Department last week giving us a new date for our mission to end - 28th September 2023. I think we will probably take a couple of weeks to drive home, by they time we stop in to visit people on the way home in both Queensland and New South Wales. I hope we spend the rest of our time in Cairns but there is one other place we would serve in Queensland and that is Mackay, as we have some very good friends there. We'll see what happens.

Monday 19 September 2022

Early start today, doing the edges for some people who can't do it themselves and have a real estate inspection happening later today.

Dental appointment at 1.30pm for me as I've had some sort of gum infection which I have self treated and is getting better, but was not that good when I made the appointment. But I self treated with an alcohol based mouthwash and burned the inside of my mouth! Fixed the infection though. The dentist took X-rays just to make sure the teeth were OK, which they were fortunately!

Had an afternoon kite foil session. Every session I have on the foil I get just a little bit better. Spending less time in the water and more time above the water. Less chance of a croc getting me!

Late pickup at the airport tonight with a friend arriving back up here after a training course in Brisbane on the weekend. Always good to help someone!

Tuesday 20 September 2022

Big bread making day today, and shopping, as we are supplying lunch to the young Elders tomorrow.

Wednesday 21 September 2022

We had our Northern Zone Conference entirely on Zoom today. 10 till 12, then an hours break, then back online till 3, no we went overtime and didn't finish till 4, but afterwards I was rewarded for my patience and had a really good kite foil session at Yorkey's!

Thursday 22 September 2022

Back up to Atherton today to visit the Cashmores. It was David's birthday today and the took us out to dinner tonight to celebrate, at the Pagoda Chinese Restaurant in Atherton, which was very nice!

Friday 23 September 2022

I am speaking and teaching this Sunday in Atherton, so spent the afternoon sitting out at Yorkey's, preparing for that while I waited for the wind to blow. The wind didn't blow (the kite season is coming to and end) but I did get my preparation done and I also got to have a good chat with "Coconut Paul" and met his friend Dave and Paul's wife Jackie. Have I talked about Paul before? One of the few Christians that you meet at a kite beach! (He's a wind-winger, not a kite surfer/foiler, but that's another story for another day.)

Saturday 24th September 2022 - AFL Grand Final Day

Flat inspections with our young Elders this morning.

And then Geelong won the Grand Final this afternoon against Sydney Swans. We sat with our friend Br Don Davies to watch it. (Don's wife Sylvia has trouble watching the rough play in an AFL game so she spent most of the afternoon watching a conference video in another room.)

I almost felt sorry for Buddy Franklin. The last time Buddy played against Geelong in a Grand Final was in the 2008 when he was playing for Hawthorn, which they won convincingly, despite Geelong having 9 more scoring shots. On the Monday morning after that game, the Ceffs and the Carswells were sitting on a plane at Melbourne Airport, waiting to takeoff for Devonport, when half of the Hawthorn players, including Buddy, got on our plane! This was early in his career, and he won his first Coleman medal, kicking 113 goals for the season, so he was quite the star. I can still picture the big smile on his face while he was finding his seat. None of the Swans players, especially Buddy, were smiling after the thrashing they received from the Cats yesterday!

Sunday 24th September

Church in Atherton again today. Our friend Leila came again, for the second time. I presided and conducted the meeting, Margot was the first speaker and I was the second speaker. I was meant to teach the joint Relief Society and Elders Quorum meeting, but received a call this morning that meant I needed to interview a new member in that time period, so I had to throw Margot in at the deep in to teach the lesson. Margot does not like teaching without plenty of preparation time, but I was able to get back in the class for the last half of the lesson and she did very well!

After the Church meetings, we went to visit David while Leila went to play golf. The golf course is practically next door to our Church building in Atherton, so that will be a challenge for he if she does become a member of the Church!

To finish of the day we attended Mannies birthday party. It was his birthday last week, but this week was the official party, which was a very big deal. Colombians, and perhaps all Latin Americans, love to celebrate! Here's a short video of Mannie jumping in the pool.
