Mission Report No 27
I'm tempted to say, that if you are thinking about becoming a doctor, perhaps specializing in emergency medicine, think again. My good friend Iamin has just finished a six-month contract at one of the nearby hospitals and it has just about killed him. The hours are so tough, and the pressure is so high, that it's a wonder that anyone can survive it. Why do we have to push our doctors so hard? Push them to the point of almost giving up? It just does not seem right.
Monday 3rd October
I was meant to be taking Iamin for a kite surf lesson this afternoon, but he is still recovering from his last week of work at the hospital. He literally cannot get off the couch, he is just so exhausted. Maybe tomorrow. So, I went kite foiling by myself.
Tuesday 4th October
Sounds like a familiar date? On this day in 1957, I popped out into the world and into my mother's arms. We celebrated today by going to Noa, a restaurant down in Edge Hill, for a beautiful lunch with "Sue" (who shouted, which was extremely nice of her).
I usually don't kite foil two days in a row, as I need a rest day. But the wind was blowing and Margot was having a "Nana Nap" so off I went to Yorkey's.
Wednesday 5th October
Birthday celebrations continue with lunch with Sue and our friend June up in Port Douglas. We went back to the Courthouse hotel, where we had lunch with Taylor and Miriam, when they were up here with us. I had the same meal again - Vietnamese Chicken and prawn salad - so nice! After finishing our meal we went up to the lookout and then drove back to June's for one of her famous homemade cheesecakes and a game of scrabble.
Thursday 6th October
"Sue" was going back home to Geelong today, so Margot used the car to pick her up and take her to the airport while Iamin picked me up and we drove up to Yorkey's Knob for a kite surf lesson. He is finally off the couch and has a little bit of energy. He didn't last real long though, as he is still not 100%, but he is going down to work for 3 weeks in Tasmania very soon, so it seemed like this was going to be his last chance for a kite lesson. He did pretty well, but his last 2 lessons were using my little 6m kite and today he used his 10m for the first time. There was a bit of a power difference that took some getting used to for him.
It was sad to see Sue go home. We'd spent a lot of time with here and help lift her spirits considerably, I think.
Friday 7th October
Breakfast with Br and Sr Hollis |
Brother and Sister Hollis, former senior missionaries who served in Mt Isa and Bowen dropped in to see us today. We had only ever met on Zoom, so it was good to meet them in real life. They are caravanning up the coast and across to Mt Isa. It was good to learn of their experiences in the areas that they served in.
Saturday 8th October
Bit of a surprise today. Some friends of ours from Victoria, Vicky and Mitch Mitchell, had been posting some things on Facebook and it looked to me like they were in our area. I sent them a message to find that they were staying in a caravan park up near Port Douglas.
