Mission Report No 24

Monday 12 September 2022

Today was little Mannie's birthday. Margot made him a fruit birthday cake, with his name carved in watermelon. It was very creative and a big hit with him as he loves watermelon. The young Elders came with us to meet the family and sing Happy Birthday to him. It was a fun night.

Kite surfed late arvo - first session on a new North Code Zero kite, which is designed for foiling. Awesome kite, but using a new kite and a long mast for the first time was not a particularly smart move!

Tuesday 13th September

Up to Atherton today to have lunch with Elders Pollock and Taufelele, and Gypsy in the park, which was really nice.

Then the Elders came to meet the Cashmores with us. Elder Pollock was thrilled to sit in David's 7 Series BMW which is sitting in his garage waiting for an engine re-build. The Elders are keen to do some service work to help the Cashmores.

Wednesday 14th September

Today was the first opportunity for Elder Misa to run a District Council meeting. He did a great job, and asked Margot and I to run the Self Reliance training in the meeting. For the past few months we have been doing this, and teaching from the Eat Healthy and Be Active manual, which the Pacific Area offices of the Church has produced to help combat the prevalence on obesity and diabetes in the area. Today was the last lesson and it consisted of the importance of making your own meals from scratch, and there were a number of very nice recipes in the manual. Each companionship picked out a recipe and committed to cook that recipe for Friday lunch at our place. Looking forward to it.

Tonight, while Margot went to a Relief Society meeting, I went to visit John, a Church member who lives just down the street from us. John is a single man, born in 1957 (which was a great year by the way) and living alone. Alone = lonely, in many cases. John is very into boating and owns (I think) 5 boats, two of which are moored in Chinaman Creek, and one of them is a yacht. The next morning he was planning to go down to his boats to move some gear from one boat to another, so I offered to go with him to give him a hand. Should be good! I love going out on boats but have very little experience with them really. I've never owned one.

Thursday 15th September

I walked down the road to John's early this morning to go down to his boats with him. We towed down his roughly 15 foot tinny to get out to his bigger boats. The main job was to transfer a small refrigerator from his old motor boat to his yacht.

The yacht!

John and I sat and had a chat

Friday 16th September

Mainly cleaning this morning, getting ready to host the young Elders for their BYO lunch. They all prepared their meals based on the recipes they chose from the Eat Healthy and Be Active manual.

Here they all are with the meals they prepared!

Elders Taufelele and Misa

Elders Black and Pollock

Elders Pemberton and Ricks

(Note to my future self who won't remember this.) They were on trade-offs today. The companionship's are actually Misa and Black, Pollock and Taufelele, and Pemberton and Ricks.

Saturday 17th September

Can't think exactly what we did and our calendar tells us nothing, but my Fitbit tells me I went and swam laps at the pool in the morning. Oh, that's right, presiding and conducting sacrament meeting in Atherton and teaching in Sunday School tomorrow means a bit of preparation time!

Sunday 18th September

Church in Atherton this morning. Our Japanese friend, Yoriko, came with us so we picked her up at about 8.00 am to drive up there. Our friend Leila attended sacrament meeting and also stayed for Sunday School, as well as the "3rd Sunday lunch" afterwards. We think she enjoyed it. She fitted in well and Sister Shore was particularly good at making her feel welcome!

On the way home we stopped at Lake Tinnaro, and at Cathedral Fig Tree, for a photo op with Yoriko.
